We started Connie's Babies in 2004. First we ordered 12 birds from a breeder in Arizona. Supposed to be 6 pairs, male and female. In fact we had 9 males and 3 females. We spent the next year and a half pairing up the birds to see who liked who. We also ended up sending feathers from each bird to Florida to have them tested for DNA to find out who is really male and female. Finally in January of 2006 we had eggs. We were so excited. From then on the birds pretty much showed us what we needed to do.
When the babies are 3 weeks old we take them from the nest box and put them in an aquarium with a heat pad underneath for warmth.
At that time we start feeding them 4 times a day with baby hand feeding formula. We use a baby spoon to do it too. We have a bowl for each bird and put a washrag in it so they don't slide around. We give each bird a spoonful of fomula and go around the circle stopping at each bird. My husband has rules too! They have to stay in their own bowl or they miss their turn! It's amazing how quickly they learn. Little by little we go from 4 feedings to 3 feedings then to 2 feedings and finally only one. By this time they are eating at least fresh vegetables and sometimes seeds too. We get really attached to them spending this much time with them. But after they are eating on their own it's time for us to find their forever home.
